What is Tobacco?
The Tobacco plant is a natural herb from the genus of herbs Nicotiana. Tobacco plants contain the active chemical nicotine, a psychoactive (mind altering) chemical that increases the activity in the central nervous system of the human body, but creates a relaxing effect.

Tobacco is available in various forms, such as cigarettes, pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco, & snuff (a powder that is sniffed or placed in the mouth to be absorbed through the gums and cheeks.)
What is Tobacco Used For?
People have used tobacco for a variety of reasons for many years.

What are The Effects of Tobacco?
When the leaves of Tobacco plants are smoked, the active chemical nicotine is absorbed by the body through the lungs and enters the bloodstream. When the Tobacco herb is chewed or sniffed, the nicotine contained within is absorbed through the mucous membranes in the mouth and nose, before it then travels to the brain.

Nicotine triggers the release of dopamine in the brain. This chemical dopamine plays a role in helping to regulate movement, learning, attention, and emotional responses. However, this chemical is most notably known for its association with pleasure in the brain. The underlying effects on the human body varies, and can result in either a stimulating, or relaxing sensation.

The amount and rate of Tobacco use can influence the level of health related risk associated with Tobacco. Using Tobacco regularly may result in an increased chance of chronic disease as well as a dependence in the substance itself. The consumption of Tobacco in any level of amount will result in an increased chance of bodily illness, whether from first hand or second hand consumption.

What is Nicotine?
Nicotine is a highly addictive chemical compound, naturally found in the Tobacco plant. This chemical compound causes an increase in the flow of blood to the heart and narrowing of arteries. Nicotine also contributes to heart attack, and can linger in the body for up to 8 hours, depending on how often it is consumed by the user. When regularly consumed, this chemical can induce a dependency in users. Many users of Tobacco suffer from symptoms of withdrawal when they quit or reducing consumption.
